Hormel celebrates Spam anniversary at NYSE

Hormel is hosting a celebration for Spam’s 75th birthday in Austin on July 28th, the Austin Daily Herald reports. The Temptations will headline the "Spamtastic Grand Opening Expansion Celebration."

Spam celebrates 75 years

Exactly 75 years ago Thursday, the first can of Spam luncheon meat rolled off the assembly line at the Geo. A. Hormel & Company plant in Austin. The canned ham became an instant success for Hormel. That brand — which Monty Python parodied in a famous 1970 sketch comedy, spawned its own museum in 2001, and became synonymous with unsolicited emails — propelled the company to international success and remains a big part of the company's image.

Hormel's Ettinger named 'Responsible CEO of the Year'

Jeffrey Ettinger was one of four chief executives honored by Corporate Responsibility magazine, Twin Cities Business reports. The “Responsible CEO of the Year” award recognizes executives who “visibly exceed standards in the areas of employee relations, environmental impact, human rights, philanthropy, and corporate responsibility practices.”

Higher expenses eat into Hormel's profits

The Austin-based company reports earnings for refrigerated foods were down 44 percent in the first quarter. Hormel says leaner profit margins for pork were a big ingredient in that. CEO and President Jeff Ettinger expects slowly improving results this year.
