Hospital mix-up: Mom breastfeeds wrong baby

Two babies were switched in the nursery at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis and a mother breastfed an infant that wasn't hers early Wednesday, WCCO reports.

The new mother from Apple Valley suspected it was not her infant and verified her suspicion with the ankle tag on the baby, KARE 11 reports.

Both mothers underwent blood testing for HIV and hepatitis, WCCO reports.

Abbott Northwestern issued a letter of apology and an admission of negligence, WCCO says.

This type of mix-up has not happened before as far as officials know, hospital spokeswoman Gloria O'Connell told the Star Tribune. The hospital has procedures to prevent it, she said.

"Apparently, somebody didn't follow procedure, so that's what we're trying to figure out," O'Connell said. "And there will be consequences."
