Hours later, details still sparse on Maple Grove homicide, officer-involved shooting

Author:

A homicide at a Maple Grove rest area early Wednesday led to a police chase through the north metro, ending when the suspect crashed into a median and was then fatally shot by police.

But details into the early morning incidents are sparse, and it's an unusual situation for investigators because it involves several police jurisdictions and officials from two counties.

“We have more questions than answers at this point,” Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek said during a news conference. “We want to get at what happened, why it happened and how it happened.”

What officials have said so far is that at about 1 a.m. Wednesday Maple Grove police responded to a report of a shooting at a rest area along Interstate 94 and Weaver Lake Road. When officials arrived, they found an man dead at the scene, according to a news release.

Then a witness, who was able to provide detailed information, told police the suspect had left in a red SUV with Oregon license plates.

When police caught up with the suspect and tried to stop him, he led police on a chase that ended when he lost control of the SUV and hit the center median on eastbound Interstate 694 east and Rice Street in Shoreview, nearly 20 miles from the Maple Grove rest area officials said.

Officials from multiple jurisdictions converged on the suspect, who got out of the car, brandishing a weapon. A Hennepin County sheriff's deputy and a Brooklyn Center officer shot and killed the suspect.

The officers involved in the shooting have not been identified.

The crash and investigation into the officer-involved shooting led to the closing of I-694 between I-35W and I-35E for more than eight hours, causing major backups during the morning commute, the Star Tribune notes.

The identities of the suspect and victim will be released by the Hennepin and Ramsey county medical examiners. Details about the relationship between the victim and suspect aren't known, officials said.

The Maple Grove Police Department is investigating the apparent homicide at the rest area, while the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the officer-involved shooting.

Anyone with information about either incident is asked to call police.
