On this day in 1861, the First Minnesota Infantry left Fort Snelling for Washington, D.C., as the group was the first in the nation to answer President Abraham Lincon's call for troops. A total of 262 men would eventually fight at the Battle of Gettysburg in July of 1861, but only 47 would return.
