Huge fire at a Minnesota grain elevator forced evacuations early Friday

A large fire at a grain elevator in west-central Minnesota could be seen for miles as flames shot into the early-morning skies Friday. 

According to the West Central Tribune, BNSF railway workers reported the fire at the Farmers Cooperative Elevator in Hanley Falls around 4:30 a.m., and it took the assistance of 11 area fire departments to put out the blaze. 

The Marshall Independent reports that large embers from the fire were blown into a residential area nearby, forcing some evacuations.

No one was injured and no other homes or business were impacted, although the elevator suffered extensive damage.

The elevator is located just west of Hwy. 23 in Hanley Falls, which is 10 miles southwest of Granite Falls, and about 2 1/2 hours west of Minneapolis.
