Hundreds attend funeral service to mourn loss of Greenwood family

Several hundred mourners came to pay their respects Sunday evening for the five members of the Short family who were found dead of an apparent murder-suicide at their home on Lake Minnetonka Sept. 10.

Brian, Karen and their children Cole, Madison and Brooklyn Short were remembered by family and friends at Grace Church in Eden Prairie.

Police believe Brian Short shot and killed his wife and three teenage children at their home in Greenwood and then turned the gun on himself.

Brian Short's brother-in-law gave some clues during the funeral as to what might have led Short to take such drastic action, according to KSTP.

Leo Williams said Short's business, a social networking service for nurses, was slow, and he "faced challenges that Brian wasn't used to having."

"Deep down there was a storm brewing, not one you could see or hear," Williams said, adding that Brian Short was struggling with depression and anxiety, KSTP reports.

Other, happier memories of the family were shared as well.

Karen's sister Kelly remembered her infectious smile, and said she was a mother who loved her children unconditionally, according to KARE 11.

The three children - Cole, Madison and Brooklyn - were described as fun-loving, generous and talented.

A memorial fund has been set up for the Short family at Provincial Bank, PO Box 459, Lakeville, MN 55044.
