A 78-year-old hunter bagged himself quite the prize at the weekend, snagging what could be a record-setting deer.

Lifelong hunter Jim Wackler, of Howard Lake, brought down a 36-point buck that unofficially measures 270 inches while hunting near Waverly, south of St. Cloud, on Friday, according to Joe's Sport Shop's Facebook page.

It has been described as a "buck of a lifetime" by whitetail deer expert Dan Cole, who posted a picture of Wackler with his catch on Twitter.

According to the Star Tribune, Wackler had experienced a frustrating hunting season up until that point, and waiting on his lawn chair when the buck entered the area "like a freight train."

Wackler, who eats everything he catches – from squirrels, to ducks and even bears – said his hunting instincts kicked in when it appeared. "I told myself to concentrate on the shot because if you look at the rack, you’ll miss," he told the newspaper.

KSTP reports that a 36-point, 270 inch long deer would be a firearms state record for non-typical antlers. Even though Wackler expects it to dry down to 250 inches, this would still make it one of the five biggest deer killed in Minnesota.

"And I put my shot gun down and I walked over there and I started counting the points," he told the TV station. And when I got to 32 I said 'Oh my God, I got the 30-point buck'."

He said he plans on having his trophy mounted.

This past weekend was the last one for Minnesota's 2A and 3A firearms hunting seasons. The 1A season ends this weekend while the 3B season ends a week later, according to the DNR.
