I-35W ramp to Hwy. 13 closure snarls Burnsville traffic

State highway officials on Sunday night closed the ramp from southbound Interstate 35 to northbound Highway 13 in Burnsville, after painting crews on Saturday discovered cracks, the Star Tribune reports. A lane of traffic on the bridge itself is also closed, the newspaper reported.

"Something hit the bridge ... damaged it, damaged the concrete. We found the damage – we're going to (as a precaution) close the bridge before it becomes a bigger problem, and get out there and fix it," Minnesota Department of Transportation spokesman Kevin Gutknecht told KSTP. KSTP reported that it was the southernmost lane of traffic that would be closed on the bridge.

It was the second time in two weeks that traffic was disrupted at the I-35/Highway 13 interchange, the Star Tribune reported. It was about a week ago that the Minnesota Department of Transportation closed the northbound Highway 13 ramp from southbound I-35W. Painters in that case, too, had noticed damage to the ramp, MnDOT reported. It was repaired and again opened to traffic Friday, the Star Tribune reported.
