Expect weekend delays, detours on I-94 east, I-35W

Road construction may snarl traffic this weekend, as all eastbound lanes of Interstate 94 close for crews to lay pavement between Highway 55/Hiawatha Avenue and Highway 280 in Minneapolis. Interstate 35W in Arden Hills is closed in both directions between Interstate 694 and Highway 10 so crews can demolish the old County 10 Bridge. The closures continue through early Monday morning.

Crews started work Monday on an Interstate 94 resurfacing project that will create traffic jams south of St. Cloud until next summer. The seven mile stretch of highway carries more than 40,000 people a day. Transportation officials warn that during peak times the backups could extend as far as 20 miles.

The crash reportedly involved six vehicles and at least four fatalities. It occurred in heavy snow a little after 3 p.m. Eastbound traffic on the Interstate was detoured and the State Patrol was working to reconstruct the accident.
