Hennepin County is closing all access points to lakes

Fox 9 reports the sheriff's office made the decision after at least eight vehicles broke through thin ice on lakes in the Twin Cities. The unseasonably warm weather has made ice conditions extremely unpredictable. Access points will remain closed until further notice.

When his wife heard a man calling for help, Dan Bauer grabbed a ladder and ran onto the ice of Lake Sarah. He helped rescue Steven Peterka, who had crashed through thin ice on his ATV and spent nearly half an hour in the icy water.

A couple of fishermen are safe after the ice they were standing on broke off and drifted across a lake north of Bemidji. The men were sinking in about 9 feet of water when emergency responders reached them.

Hennepin County to start screening for weapons in suburban courts

Authorities are installing screening equipment similar to that in airports to scan visitors for guns, knives, mace and other such items. The change comes after a district court judge and the county sheriff said they were worried about the lack of security in suburban courtrooms.

Officials said the sheriff’s office has received 1,875 applications for permits to carry a gun over the first four months of the year. Over the same time last year, there were 1,220 applications that were received.
