In a switch, anglers rescue DNR officers

It's not unusual that Minnesota Department of Natural Resources officials are called to assist hikers, campers and anglers that have landed into trouble.

But in a turnaround last weekend, four fishermen rescued two DNR officers who had fallen into frigid waters when their canoe caught on something submerged in a section of rapids and then capsized in the Boundary Waters, WDIO reported.

The four anglers saw the two officers fall into the water, and immediately paddled off to help, WDIO reports.

“One was breathing heavy. He was clinging to the canoe and the canoe kept rolling. We told him to let go and he proceeded to grab onto the back of our canoe and rode right down to the shore,” angler Nate Thom told WDIO.

The DNR used the incident to remind Boundary Waters visitors to watch for submerged objects and always wear a life vest. WDIO's story:
