Toddler dies after being found bruised, not breathing; 1 suspect in custody

First responders were unable to save an 18-month-old girl, who was found not breathing and with "suspicious" bruises on her body.

The Maplewood Police Department says officers were called to a home around 11 am. Thursday on a report of a baby not breathing, according to a news release.

Personnel arrived to find the child unresponsive, with bruises on her body and face that were "suspicious in nature," police said. They attempted to resuscitate her, but were unable to.

Her death is being investigated as a possible homicide.

Police say the boyfriend of the girl's mother was one of two men home at the time. He was arrested and police are investigating, but he has not been charged. He is not the biological father of the girl.

The other man was questioned and released.

“Even while investigators work to determine exactly what happened to this little girl, no answer will mask the tragedy of her death,” Maplewood Police Chief Paul Schnell said. “Few crimes are more disturbing than the death of child at the hands of a caregiver."

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.

Minnesota lawmakers are considering significant changes to the state's child protection laws, sparked by the Star Tribune’s special report into the death of 4-year-old Eric Dean, who was killed by his stepmother.
