Is a 9-story hotel next for Minneapolis' Uptown?

From a two-story Indian bistro to a nine-story boutique hotel?

That may be the transformation in store for a corner in a thriving Minneapolis neighborhood.

Graves Hospitality has submitted plans to build a 144-room hotel at Lake and Emerson Streets in Uptown, the Business Journal reports.

If approved by the city, Graves would build and manage the hotel, which would be a Moxy – Marriott's new three-star brand that the Business Journal says is aimed at milennials.

The Star Tribune says the first Moxy is operating in Milan, Italy, with five others preparing to open in Europe.

While Graves has submitted plans to the Minneapolis planning commission, it has some hurdles to clear at city hall.

The Business Journal says the hotel would need a variance from city parking regulations because plans call for just eight parking spaces instead of the 48 the city would normally require. (The plan calls for hotel guests to use valet parking.)

According to the Southwest Journal, Graves Hospitality President Ben Graves, recently told a neighborhood group his company has a purchase agreement to buy the property – the former home of Tadka Indian Bistro – but the purchase is contingent on city approval of the hotel.

The Journal says Graves told the group a spring groundbreaking is possible if the city OKs the plan.

The Star Tribune says the planning commission is scheduled to take it up on Nov. 19.
