Although fall doesn't technically arrive for another 10 days, Minnesota is getting a burst of weather this week that will be decidedly autumnal.

After a warmer and more humid Monday, temperatures will drop on Tuesday and Wednesday with lows expected that have not been seen since spring.

According to the National Weather Service Twin Cities, overnight lows of between 38-48 are expected this Wednesday, with daytime highs of just 60-65.

In its forecast discussion, the NWS says that the lows in the early hours of Wednesday morning will mean some "patchy frost" is possible.

"If conditions develop just right," the forecast says, "we may see the season's first frost over a portion of central Minnesota."

There is likely to be some rain arriving Monday night, with storms a possibility over parts of the state, but when the colder weather arrives later this week, it should at least be dry.

Things should warm up slightly toward the end of the week, and looking further ahead the NWS says temperatures should return to average or slightly above average by early next week.

We're now getting close to the return of freezing weather.

According to the Minnesota DNR's climate models, there is a 10 percent chance that temperatures will hit 32 in the Twin Cities on or around September 25.

The probability this arrives by the end of September is more than 20 percent.
