Islamic group buys former Medtronic HQ in St. Anthony

The group called the Abu-Huraira Islamic Center purchased the building for $1.9 million on Aug. 23, despite the St. Anthony City Council's June rejection of the group's proposal, the Star Tribune reports. The council said a religious and cultural center was not compatible with the site's light-industrial zoning. A lawyer for the Islamic group said its plans for the center have not changed, but it's not clear how the group would get around the council ruling.

The proposed Abu-Huraira Islamic Center had been on hold for months after some residents objected to the center and city leaders studied whether city zoning would support the facility.
