It's not just you - the air smells terrible, and here's why

If you woke up thinking the air smelled funny this morning, you are not alone.

Air quality for a majority of the state has been deemed unhealthy, and the National Weather Service is asking for people to close their windows as well as avoiding vigorous activity.

The area, which encompasses most of eastern Minnesota, includes Duluth, the Twin Cities and Rochester.

The smoke is coming from a wildfire that is burning in Hubbard County in northern Minnesota. Yesterday, Gov. Mark Dayton signed an emergency executive order asking for help putting out the wildfire.

People with heart and lung disease, older adults and children are asked to not spend long periods of time outside until it clears up.

This comes after an air pollution health advisory was called for the northeastern part of the state through Saturday night.

The advisory issued by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) covers the Arrowhead region, including the Iron Range and the North Shore. Hibbing, International Falls, Duluth, and Grand Marais are among the cities under the advisory, which continues through 10 p.m. Saturday.
