There's a decent chance North Dakota State University's football team is in pursuit of an eighth consecutive national championship when it plays at Target Field in Minneapolis in 2019.
The Minnesota Twins and NDSU announced Monday that NDSU football will play Butler University at Target Field on Aug. 31, 2019. It's the season opener for both teams.
"Bison Nation is well represented in the Twin Cities," NDSU head coach Chris Klieman said in a press release. "Having this opportunity will be exciting for our team to play in front of our fans in such an incredible venue. It will also aid us in recruiting, as Minneapolis-St. Paul is one of our most prominent recruiting areas."
Twins President Dave St. Peter added: "The powerful tradition of NDSU football should create a special atmosphere within the ballpark. I have no doubt Bison Nation will be headquartered in the Twin Cities that weekend."
NDSU (5-1 this season) has won five straight Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) titles and is currently ranked No. 4 in the FCS Coaches Poll.
Unless other college games are added, the NDSU-Butler game will be the second football game played at Target Field. The Tommies and Johnnies will play a football game at the Twins' home in 2017.
The 2019 schedule allows for 12 regular season games, so NDSU will still play its six home games at the Fargodome in addition to five road games and the contest at Target Field.
