Jesse Larson could be Minnesota's first winner on The Voice

He'll compete against the three other finalists starting Monday night.

As a state, we've had one victory on a modern national singing competition: Home-free. The a cappella group took first in NBC's (now-dead) show The Sing Off back in 2013.

Minnesota got close with Kat Perkins the next year. But generally things have been about as successful as the Minnesota's male pro sports teams.

Maybe luck will change this week with Jesse Larson.

Larson is one of four finalists on NBC's The Voice. He and his competitors will sing against each other for the final time this season starting Monday night as part of the two-part finale.

People like him. The blues guitarist has wowed the judges (and voting fans) since his blind audition performance, and last week was voted through as an instant save by viewers. He ended up on Team Adam Levine (who leveraged his Maroon 5 fans for voting help, by the way), and is now one of the finalists. The winner gets a grand prize of a recording contract.

Now, our colleague Dana Wessel made a pretty good point recently – you probably can't name any of the past winners of The Voice.

"But that isn’t the point," he argues. "They aren’t looking to turn people into stars. Sure, if the next Taylor Swift was born outta The Voice it isn’t like they are going to be mad. The Voice is successful because of the judges. That is the whole appeal of the show."

Whether you watch for Larson, or for one of the judges (Levine/Alicia Keys/Gwen Stefani/Mr. Gwen Stefani), it airs at 7 p.m. Monday on NBC, with part two set for 8 p.m. Tuesday.

According to Larson's bio, he was introduced to classic blues by his father – but after his dad’s sudden death, he lost his passion for music.

That is until Prince came calling. He auditioned for the Purple One numerous times, and ultimately ended up working with Prince protege Judith Hill. When Prince died last year, the tour was canceled, but Larson’s continued playing. Here's his most recent performance on the show:
