Judge: Duluth head shop is a public nuisance

The legal battle continues for a downtown Duluth head shop after a judge ruled that the business is a public nuisance, the Duluth News Tribune reports.

As part of the ruling by a St. Louis County district court judge, the Last Place on Earth is ordered to hire two police officers to provide security and nuisance control an hour before the store opens until closing time.

Law enforcement calls to the business increased 81 percent since it became the only source for "legal alternatives."

A police spokesman tells the newspaper staffing two officers would cost the shop more than $2,000 per week.

A lawyer for owner Jim Carlson says he will appeal the judge's order.

The ruling comes less than a month after the owner and three employees pleaded not guilty to federal charges of selling synthetic drugs.
