A North Dakota orthopedic surgeon accused of drugging his wife and raping her while she was unconscious has been acquitted on all charges, the Associated Press reports.

Jon Norberg, 42, could have faced up to life in prison if he had been convicted in the case. The Fargo jury deliberated about four hours, the AP says.

Norberg had been accused of giving the drug propofol to his wife. The medication featured prominently in the death of pop singer Michael Jackson.

Alonna Norberg testified in the trial she awoke one night in June last year to discover her husband forcing her to perform oral sex, the AP reports. Defense lawyers argued she made up rape allegations to help her in a divorce and child custody case.
