A K-9 handler and prison lieutenant from Minnesota was killed in a snowmobile crash in Wisconsin.

John Rathai, 36, of Medford, died when his snowmobile rear-ended another snowmobile in Washburn, Wisconsin last Sunday.

The Faribault Daily News reports that Rathai was wearing his helmet but sustained severe injuries that ultimately proved fatal.

It was later revealed in a Faribault Police newsletter, The Point After, that Rathai was a Lieutenant at Minnesota Correctional Facility-Faribault.

He was also a K-9 handler who worked closely with Faribault Police Department officers.

A GoFundMe page set up in his memory has so far raised more than $8,000 to help Rathai's 10-year-old daughter.

"He was a great friend, brother, son, and dad," it says. "He loved his friends and his family with his whole heart."
