Kindergartner is third child to die in car crash

The third child in an extended family has died from injuries in a collision near Prescott, Wis. on Thursday.
The Pioneer Press reported that 5-year-old Laynie Jo Amos died Saturday. She had been airlifted to Regions Hospital in St. Paul after the collision. She was in the car crash that killed her cousins Lydia Milberg, 11, and Clara Pavek, 5. They both died at the scene.

KSTP reports the update was included on a Facebook memorial page set up by the family.

Kari Milberg, Lydia's 32-year-old mother, remained in critical condition Saturday, a Regions Hospital spokesman said.A CaringBridge page said that she has undergone several surgeries. A fourth child injured in the crash, 3-year-old Easton Milberg, was treated at Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare on Friday. The Pioneer Press story said that he was no longer listed as a patient as of Saturday night.

KMSP reported that Milberg was driving a small sport utility vehicle that collided with a box truck in Oak Grove, Wis., about 30 miles southeast of St. Paul.

At the time of the accident, the Pierce County Herald reported that Pierce County Sheriff Nancy Hove said in a news conference that Millberg was headed to a sister's house in Prescott at the time of the crash. She said Millberg's two nieces in the car were the children of two separate sisters, meaning three families were involved.

"You are dealing with kids," Hove said, when asked about the effect it's had on her officers. "It's very traumatic for whole community."

The driver of the truck, Jose Mendoza, 24, of Rockford, Ill., and his two passengers were not injured in the collision, according to the sheriff's office.
