Thousands of folks gathered to pay tribute to the memories of fallen soldiers at the Fort Snelling Cemetery Monday, KSTP-TV reports, with a somber and sometimes emotional Memorial Day event.
The event featured re-enactments and large military demonstrations, the station reports, as well as a speech by Amy Klobuchar. Minnesota's senior U.S. senator addressed the crowd, highlighting a bill she's introduced to help veteran's with health-care issues.
Lt. Col. Mark Weber of Rosemount, who gave the keynote address. He has been diagnosed with stage four cancer and wrote a book of lessons for his three sons, according to channel 5.
"The passage of time helps us forget the pain and suffering," Weber said. "Makes us forget, and so we must return year after year to reflect upon the selfless devotion to hundreds of our fellow citizens."
Meanwhile in Richfield, KSTP-TV says, there was a similar event at Veterans Park, with a dedication of a new memorial. The 'Honoring All Veterans Memorial' features granite tablets with thousands of names of veterans, the station reports. Here's video:
