Lake Superior water temps 20 degrees above normal for end of July

Some of the temperature readings coming in from buoys show the big lake is the warmest it's been in 30 years. In some places it's already 70 degrees and it's likely to keep warming up for another few weeks. Record-breaking summer heat is part of it, but the warm-up actually has its roots in our balmy winter.

A group of brave surfers were spotted hitting the waves on Lake Superior Friday. WDIO in Duluth reports the air temperature was near single digits, but the Great Lake was in the mid-30s. One of the surfers says he's been catching the waves for the past 15 years.
