Latest St. Paul school attack sees student punch staff member in the face

Author:

A 13-year-old girl is in custody after allegedly punching a member of school staff in the face, in the latest incident of student violence in St. Paul.

FOX 9 reports the incident happened on Wednesday at Journeys Secondary School, a school for students with emotional and behavioral disabilities, which is located in the West Seventh area.

The student was taken into custody after the attack and for being "aggressive" towards other staff, and is being held at the Ramsey County Juvenile Detention Center.

The Pioneer Press reports she has been charged with felony theft from a person and misdemeanor fifth-degree assault, adding that two victims were listed in the police report.

The Ramsey County Attorney's Office revealed earlier this week that there had been 27 reports of students attacking teachers in the county this year alone, following a serious attack at St. Paul Central High School.

Two boys have been charged in relation to that incident, that left one teacher with a traumatic brain injury and another one with minor injuries.

In response to Wednesday's attack, the St. Paul School District told the Pioneer Press it is committed to making schools safer.

"We want safe learning environments for our students and staff and are doing what we can to make that possible," it said in a statement. "It saddens us that some students resort to violent behavior rather than seek peaceful resolutions, but we know that some of that is because they live in a society that is plagued with violence.

"They may see it in their homes, neighborhoods, communities and in the world. We wish this weren't happening and will continue to work to make a positive difference in their lives."

The St. Paul teachers' union is considering a strike in response to the recent uptick in violence. It's been a key feature of discussions it's been having with the district over a new two-year contract for teachers.
