Thursday marks 26 years since Jacob Wetterling was abducted, and people across the country are asked to leave a porch light on in honor of him.

Jacob was 11 years old when he went missing. He was biking with his brother and friend on Oct. 22, 1989, in his hometown of St. Joseph when he was kidnapped by a masked man with a gun.

His story has captivated Minnesotans and people across the country, and changed the way law enforcement officials search for missing kids across the U.S., WCCO reports.

Despite his case being open, there have been no new developments as of late, the news station notes.

But he has not been forgotten. To honor Jacob, the Jacob Wetterling Resource Center is asking people to leave a porch light on Thursday.

"People rally around turning their porch lights on on this date to remain a hopeful light for Jacob, and this year we're asking people to take the extra step of sitting down with your family to talk prevention," Ailson Feigh, program manager for the resource center, told KNSI.

“We are so grateful for the support we have been given and continue to receive from the greater community,” Patty Wetterling, Jacob's mother, said in a news release. “We are thrilled that more and more kids are being found and returned to their families, and we will continue to fight for a safer world so that abduction and sexual exploitation of children doesn’t happen in the first place."

Anyone with information about Jacob's disappearance is asked to contact the Stearns County Sheriff's Office at 320-251-4240.

People took to social media using the hashtag #jacobshope to share messages to honor the missing boy, who is now 37 years old.
