Still awaiting state money, Minnesota Zoo projects on hold

Minnesota Zoo officials had been stalking the state Legislature for $15 million this year, but lawmakers wrapped up the session without approving any money for the state-operated facility in Apple Valley, the Pioneer Press reported.

That put a few projects on hold, including renovations to the million-gallon tank habitat for Hawaiian monk seals in Discovery Bay, as well as remodeling of a snow monkey exhibit. Discovery Bay used to house the zoo's dolphins, but that exhibit closed amid some controversy.

Zoo leaders continue to put privately funded projects in motion as part of an ambitious expansion project, including a new "Crossroads Park" with a carousel.

The zoo plans to dismantle its outdated monorail, due in part to costly repair estimates and declining rider interest, the Pioneer Press noted.
