Central corridor rail project 50 percent complete

A project that has delivered both promise and pain to parts of St. Paul has reached the halfway point. Central Corridor Light Rail Transit (LRT) officials say the 11-mile project that will link Minneapolis and St. Paul via Washington and University avenues is 50 percent complete and on schedule to be 75 percent completed by year's end. Service is slated to begin in 2014.

The Met Council is rebranding the light rail system, which will be known as "Metro" once the Central Corridor starts up. Minnesota Public Radio says the Hiawatha line will be the "blue line." The Central Corridor will be the "green line." And the up-and-coming bus rapid transit routes on 35W and Cedar Avenue will be the orange and red lines.

Drivers and rail passengers will have to continue using alternate routes as repairs continue indefinitely on the Martin Olav Sabo pedestrian and bicycle bridge that spans the route. Fox 9 reports crews are still trying to stabilize the bridge. The city's transportation director tells the station that every time workers touch one part of the bridge, something else happens.
