Met Council splits up Southwest Corridor light-rail contract

The Metropolitan Council has decided not to award a nearly $100 million contract to URS Corp. Instead, the Star Tribune reports the agency divided engineering work for the $1.25 billion Southwest Corridor light-rail line into four separate contracts. San Francisco-based URS will still be allowed to bid on the smaller contracts, despite its involvement with the Sabo pedestrian bridge and the Interstate 35W bridge before it collapsed in August 2007.

Expect weekend delays, detours on I-94 east, I-35W

Road construction may snarl traffic this weekend, as all eastbound lanes of Interstate 94 close for crews to lay pavement between Highway 55/Hiawatha Avenue and Highway 280 in Minneapolis. Interstate 35W in Arden Hills is closed in both directions between Interstate 694 and Highway 10 so crews can demolish the old County 10 Bridge. The closures continue through early Monday morning.

Businesses hurt by light-rail construction borrow $2M

Nearly 150 bars, restaurants and a variety of other businesses have borrowed more than $2 million from a "forgivable" loan fund as they try to stay afloat during disruptive construction of the 11-mile Central Corridor Light Rail Transit line, the Pioneer Press reports. The line will connect the downtowns of Minneapolis and St. Paul by 2014.

Ice closes I-94 in northwestern Minnesota

The State Patrol closed down Interstate 94 after at least four semi trucks slid on the icy road, causing traffic backups for miles. The Forum reports at least 100 motorists were temporarily stranded by the interstate closure.
