A fire blazed through a rural Minnesota church Saturday morning, toppling its steeple.

Hawk Creek Lutheran Church is in the small town of Sacred Heart – that's located southwest of Willmar.

Kayla Hegna posted photos to Facebook saying multiple fire crews worked to save the "little country church."

Some strong thunderstorms rolled through parts of Minnesota on Saturday.

Officials tell KARE 11 that lighting struck the building and started the fire.

The 1880s church has been declared a total loss.

"Hard to watch the church that has been attended by my family for generations burn to the ground," Hegna writes.
