There are a lot of places to watch free movies outdoors this summer.

First, Minneapolis Parks and Rec reveals a sweet lineup of movies showing at city parks, and now Hennepin County has announced its schedule for free flicks at Target Field Station.

While the parks lineup has a range of genres, the Target Field Station movies definitely veer more PG, with Pixar efforts among the family-friendly fare on the schedule.

The showings in the public space next to the downtown Minneapolis light-rail station get underway next Thursday with a baseball classic from 1993, The Sandlot.

  • June 1: The Sandlot
  • June 8: Footloose (1984)
  • June 29: The Parent Trap (1961)
  • July 13: Inside Out
  • August 10: Finding Dory
  • August 24: Free Willy

Spectators are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket to watch in comfort, finding a spot on the grass outside the ballpark as the movie is shown on the nearby video board.

The screenings are part of Hennepin County's Go Outside series, which will also see trivia nights, fitness sessions and family events held at the station and South Plaza in downtown throughout the summer. More information can be found here.

A special showing of Purple Rain a week after the death of Prince last April was held at Target Field Station, which attracted thousands of people.
