Kevin Gates has just released a new single, "What If?"

A particularly introspective track, even by Gates' oft-introspective standards, "What If?" explores the presence of a higher power in our lives and a reflection of how God would guide through the struggles.

Gates is always at his most compelling when he's conflicted, and "What If?" is particularly contentious in these internal conflicts. Emotional, visceral and God-fearing, it's pretty powerful.

So powerful, in fact, it's easy to forget it's a remake of Joan Osborne's mid-'90s jam "What If God Was One of Us?"

In all seriousness, for as controversial as Gates has been over the past year, "What If" might be his genuine moment of redemption. His wife's excitement over sharing the track on Instagram hints at Gates being released soon.
