Listeria linked to Wisconsin cheese; one Minnesotan dead

State and federal health officials are investigating an outbreak of Listeria linked to cheese made in Wisconsin.

Minnesota's health department reports one older resident died after eating the cheese last month and another became ill, WCCO says. Illnesses were also reported in at least three other states.

The outbreak is connected to Les Frères Cheese, which is made by Crave Brothers Farmstead Classics Cheese in Waterloo, Wisconsin. In its announcement, the Health Department says anyone with that cheese or with Petit Frère or Petit Frère with Truffles should NOT eat it.

The listeriosis infection usually affects older adults, pregnant women, or newborns, the Health Department says. It's contracted by eating food contaminated with the Listeria bacterium.

The state Agriculture Department is also working on the investigation, as are two federal agencies: the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Food and Drug Administration.
