Lists: Twin Cities No. 1 for fitness, Minn. tops for healthy seniors

Minneapolis and St. Paul are the healthiest, fittest cities in the nation for the third year in a row, according to an analysis released Wednesday of the 50 most populous metropolitan areas country.

The other top fit cities, according to the American Fitness Index report by the American College of Sports Medicine: Washington, D.C., Portland, San Francisco and Denver. At the bottom of the list: San Antonio, Detroit and Oklahoma City.

The annual American Fitness Index is figured using a number of health behavior factors, including smoking, exercise, obesity rates, chronic health problems and access to health care, USA Today notes.

The report also takes into consideration environmental factors, including availability of parks, recreational facilities, walking trails and farmers' markets.

Another report released Wednesday suggests Minnesota is tops among states for healthy seniors. That study, which considered both individual health and access to key health resources, was conducted by the United Health Foundation. More info on Minnesota for that study is here. (Minnesota was No. 5 for overall health, according to the foundation.)

In that ranking, Minnesota beat out other top states: Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Iowa.

As part of a broader report, the foundation says an aging nation that's living longer but with growing rates of obesity, diabetes and other chronic diseases points to an emerging health care crisis, USA Today noted.
