Bill Bauer got his start the late 1970s at a tiny northeast Minneapolis bar called Mickey Finn's, considered the birthplace of the Twin Cities' stand-up scene, the Star Tribune reports. He never got the national recognition of several of his local peers, but his willingness to take chances on stage and support his fellow comics off stage made him a beloved figure on the scene.

He died in his sleep Wednesday night in Inver Grove Heights at age 62.

Fellow comedian Louie Anderson told the Pioneer Press, "Today we lost one of the founding fathers of standup comedy in Minnesota. The funniest guy I ever worked with. He was funny, he was brave, and he was charitable."

His son Patrick tweeted: My dad @TaoOfPooka died last night. He'd stated that he was either to be partially cremated or taxidermied. He was awesome and I love him.
