It looks like Maple Grove may be getting a Chicago-style hot dog restaurant after all.

Earlier this month, the Maple Grove City Council voted to reject the plan to build a Portillo's restaurant in a parking lot across Elm Creek Boulevard North from the Shoppes at Arbor Lakes.

The reason? Some city council members didn't think Portillo's would drive more foot traffic to Arbor Lakes, which has been struggling with store closures in recent years.

The city council's denial of the plan spurred a petition, and an update on the petition's website Monday night says the denial order to prevent Portillo's from opening near Arbor Lakes was denied in a 4-1 vote.

Before the vote, the city council heard from eight community members who all supported bringing Portillo's to Maple Grove, Maple Grove Voice reports.

The city will have a final vote approving Portillo's plans on May 1, the publication says.

If it gets approved, the Maple Grove location will be the second Portillo's location in Minnesota. Another location is expected to open in Woodbury in late July.
