They don't get much closer than this one. But the Minnesota Lynx's hopes for back-to-back WNBA championships evaporated in a 77-76 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks at Target Center Thursday night.

L.A.'s Nneka Ogwumike, who won the league's Most Valuable Player award this year, hit what proved to be the winning shot with just four seconds remaining.

With the victory, the Sparks won the best-of-five championship 3 games to 2.

In a back-and-forth finish, Candace Parker gave Los Angeles a one-point lead with less than 20 seconds remaining. Maya Moore answered for Minnesota, but Ogwuimike's shot in the paint over Sylvia Fowles would be the final basket of the series.

Moore led the Lynx with 23 points, adding six rebounds and 11 assists.

Parker led the Sparks with 28 points and 12 rebounds.

She dedicated the game to her college coach, Pat Summit, whose Hall of Fame career at the University of Tennessee was ended prematurely by early-onset Alzheimer's. Summit died in June.

The Lynx were aiming for their second straight WNBA title. The Sparks were the last to repeat as champions back in 2002 and hadn't won another crown until Thursday.

As with any one-point loss, there are plenty of things to second guess. But the biggest might be a shot clock violation by L.A. that the referees missed with a little over a minute to play.
