A 19-year-old Macalester College student from France, who was hit by a sport utility vehicle in St. Paul last week, has died from her injuries. Cleo Louise Marie Thiberge had been in St. Paul only about a day when she was struck at the intersection of Hamline and Grand avenues.

A foreign exchange college student from France has died of injuries she suffered when she was hit by a vehicle while she was crossing at the intersection of Hamline and Grand avenues last week, the Pioneer Press reports.

Cleo Louise Marie Thiberge, 19, had been in St. Paul only about a day. She was preparing for classes at Macalester College in St. Paul.

Thiberge was "in or near a crosswalk" when she was struck, a St. Paul Police spokesman said, the Star Tribune reported.

The driver cooperated with police and was not arrested, the Star Tribune says.

"This is a deep loss to our college community," the Rev. Lucy Forster-Smith, a chaplain at the school, said in a message sent Monday to the Macalester community, the newspaper reported.

In Minnesota and nationwide, pedestrian deaths have been on the rise and motorists are mostly to blame, MinnPost recently reported.
