A 34-year-old man apparently drowned Thursday at a local community center pool.

Officials responded to a "medical emergency" at the Eden Prairie Community Center around 8:30 p.m. Thursday, according to an email news release from the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office.

Bystanders, employees at the community center and first responders tried to resuscitate the man, but were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the hospital around 9:40 p.m., a news release from the Eden Prairie Police Department says.

The man had been swimming in the dive pool area of the Aquatics Center during adult lap swim hours – no lifeguards were on-duty at the time of the incident, Eden Prairie officials say.

The sheriff's office is investigating the incident, noting the identity of the man and his official cause of death will be released by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner.

The Hennepin County Health Inspector conducted a full inspection of the dive pool and it will be reopened to the public later Friday, officials note.

The Aquatics Center at the Eden Prairie Community Center was recently redone. It now features two eight-lane pools with two diving boards, a climbing wall, a zero-depth recreational pool, a spa and water slide, according to the city's website.

Drownings in Minnesota

Through July of this year, there had been 25 non-boating drownings in Minnesota, according to figures from the state Department of Natural Resources.

In all of 2015, there were 35 non-boating drownings in the state.

Drownings are often silent, as the DNR and many others have pointed out, and can happen in less than a minute.

“Drowning is not typically the wild waving of hands and screaming that you might see on TV,” Stan Linnell with the DNR told BringMeTheNews last month. “It’s usually very quiet. Someone struggling will usually have their head tilted back, be gasping for air, and maybe just kind of bobbing up and down in the water, and can be very fast.”
