KARE 11 reports that Demetrius Ballinger, 25, on Tuesday was charged with 27 separate felony counts in connection with standoff with police Aug. 31 in which police shot a man who had been a hostage.

A lengthy complaint against Ballinger says that he admitted he took a shot at a fleeing hostage, one of 11 holed up in the Red Roof Inn room, KARE says. It was that fleeing hostage, Mark Henderson, 19, of St. Paul, who was fatally shot by police.

Officers said they believed Henderson was armed and they say he didn't respond to their commands, the Star Tribune reports. It is believed that Henderson did not have a weapon.

The charges include attempted murder and criminal sexual conduct involving a victim under age 13. Police say he sexually assaulted four juveniles in the bathroom of the room, KARE reports.
