Man charged with murder in deadly stabbing near light rail station

A witness said the men had been arguing.

A man has been charged in the deadly stabbing that happened near a Minneapolis light rail station earlier this week.

The Hennepin County Attorney's office says 43-year-old Frank Runningshield, Jr. is facing a second degree murder charge in the death of 26-year-old Daquan Thompson.

The incident happened Tuesday evening just outside the Hiawatha light rail station at 2200 Lake Street East.

According to the attorney's office, Runningshield, Thompson and two other people had been talking near the entrance of the Blue Line station around 7:15 p.m.

A witness told investigators the men were arguing about a marijuana sale.

According to the complaint, surveillance video shows the conversation ending, then Runningshield making a stabbing motion toward Thompson, who immediately doubled over.

Runningshield walked away and Thompson died about 45 minutes later at the Hennepin County Medical Center.

On Wednesday, Runningshield was arrested and told police that he and Thompson had been arguing for about three weeks because Thompson was “messing with” Runningshield’s friends and family, according to the complaint.

Runningshield is expected to make his first court appearance Monday.
