A Fergus Falls council member is dead after an 11-mile police chase in west-central Minnesota Monday, which ended when he collided with an empty squad car.

On Tuesday morning, the State Patrol identified the suspect as Timothy Rundquist of Fergus Falls, a 62-year-old male. He was not wearing a seat belt, the patrol's report says.

Rundquist was elected to the council in January 2013, according to the city's website. He represents Ward 3, the Fergus Falls Journal says.

According to the State Patrol, a trooper initiated a traffic stop on Highway 54, just outside of Elbow Lake shortly after 5 p.m. Monday.

The suspect vehicle then took off, and authorities began their pursuit.

They attempted to use stop sticks to end the chase, but the driver ran over them and continued.

After an 11-mile pursuit, the driver hit a parked, unoccupied Ashby Police squad car head-on near the intersection of I-94 and HIghway 59 – directly north of Elbow Lake. He was trapped in his vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers were injured.

Police from Ashby and Fergus Falls, plus the Grant County and Otter Tail County sheriff's offices are all listed as assisting agencies.
