Man drowns while testing new boat; fisherman killed in lake collision

Two more boaters have been confirmed dead after incidents on Minnesota lakes.

A man drowned after falling overboard in Lake Le Homme Dieu near Alexandria Saturday, while an elderly man died in a boat crash on Fish Hook Lake in Park Rapids on Thursday.

They are the second and third lake deaths confirmed this weekend, after a canoeist drowned in a reservoir near Rochester after their canoe capsized Saturday morning.

On Le Homme Dieu, 29-year-old Brandon Darryl Randt, of Alexandria, was "lake testing" a new boat and was on his way back to shore around 9:15 a.m., according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

A witness said they lost sight of the boat because of the glare from the sun, and "then saw Randt in the water and the boat circling."

The witness told authorities where they last saw Randt, who was not wearing a life jacket, but it wasn't until 1:35 p.m. that his body was found in 24 feet of water.

In Park Rapids, KSTP reports that 78-year-old local man John Patrick Sargent was driving his fishing boat when it collided with another boat on Thursday, with Sargent and his two passengers thrown from the boat – none of them wearing life jackets.

His body was found in eight feet of water just before 3 p.m. on Friday, the TV station notes. One of his passengers suffered a broken rib and the other three people involved – two of them from the other boat – had minor injuries.
