Man found dead at resort in Minnesota wilderness

Staff realized something was up because his water meter kept running.

A Minneapolis man spending time at a resort in Minnesota's Superior National Forest was found dead Sunday.

The Cook County Sheriff's Department confirms it was called to the Golden Eagle Lodge on Flour Lake, not far off of the Gunflint Trail, just after 5 p.m.

It was there that Kent Merkey, 49, of Minneapolis, was found dead in his accommodation.

Staff had reported that his water meter had been observed running for an extended prior of the time.

Merkey had been staying at the lodge alone and police were told by a family member that he had a history of seizures.

He's was taken to the Cook County North Shore Hospital, and will undergo an autopsy to determine his cause of death.

The family-owned Golden Eagle Lodge resort, about 30 miles north of Grand Marais, comprises a number of cabins, a campground and a main lodge that houses an office, gift shop, fishing supplies and a common room for guests.
