A man has been sentenced to 26 years in prison – double the sentencing recommendation – for sexually assaulting his developmentally disabled roommate.
Omar Muhammed, 21, of Hugo, Minnesota moved in with the 42 year old last year after meeting her in a grocery store, and subjected her to physical abuse during his stay.
This abuse was with the aim of coercing sexual conduct, the Washington County Attorney said on Friday, stating he would repeatedly kick and punch her, causing bruising on the arms, legs and torso of the victim.
He would then rape her by pinning her down by her shoulders on the bed, placing his hand around her neck, or kicking her.
Muhammed was convicted in January of 1st degree criminal sexual conduct and was sentenced this week to 312 months in prison, which was twice what sentencing guidelines recommend.
"This was an extraordinarily brutal sexual assault," Washington County Attorney Pete Orput said. "The jury should get great credit for providing justice to this victim."
