Man in his 20s dies after falling ill while hiking in the Boundary Waters

A man in his 20s has died while hiking in Minnesota's Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, officials have confirmed.

KSTP reports that the 27-year-old man had been backpacking the Devil's Cascade/Sioux Hustler Hiking Trail with two friends when he was taken ill and was unable to continue.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office told the TV station that he died in a remote part of the wilderness area near Lower Pauness Lake, not far from the Canadian border, before first responders could get there.

The Duluth News Tribune said that he was found around 4 a.m. Tuesday by rescue teams, with Lt. Kurt Erickson saying: "We were able to find him 7 miles into the Boundary Waters on the Sioux-Hustler Trail. Whatever the cause of his medical emergency, it appeared to have claimed his life."

One of the man's friends had walked to an area where he could get cellphone reception to call for help, while the other stayed with him. Erickson told the newspaper rescuers attempted to reach him by foot and boat, with snow, sleet and rain hampering efforts.

The man has not yet been identified by the authorities, with MPR reporting that the sheriff's office and medical examiner are currently investigating his death.

The USDA website describes the Sioux-Hustler Trail as a 30-mile round-trip hike with a loop, recommending that hikers take a map and a compass with them.
