Man in wheelchair struck, killed on Minneapolis highway

A man in a wheelchair died when he was hit by a vehicle Thursday night at Olson Memorial Highway and James Avenue North in Minneapolis, the Star Tribune reports.

The unidentified man was headed north on James when he attempted to cross the highway at about 9:40 p.m., at an intersection with no crosswalk or traffic signal, police spokeswoman Cyndi Barrington told the newspaper.

The driver of the car stopped and remained at the scene after hitting the man, WCCO reported. Another driver stopped to assist, KSTP reported.

The driver was not arrested, FOX 9 reported. Police are reconstructing the accident, and the Hennepin County medical examiner will determine the cause of death, FOX reported.

A witness told KARE 11 that the man in the wheelchair was swerving in and out of traffic almost like he had a "death wish."

The witness told KARE he did not believe the accident was the driver's fault.
