Update: Man missing after boating accident on St. Croix River has been found

The boating accident happened early Sunday morning.

Officials have located the man who was missing after a boat accident on the St. Croix River early Sunday.

In an update Monday morning, the Washington County Sheriff's Office said the man "has been found and he did survive the accident." He has been identified as 36-year-old Jason Elgersma from Minneapolis.

The sheriff's office says it responded to a single boat accident at 2:51 a.m. near the city of Bayport. FOX 9 says the incident happened about 100 yards from shore, not fair from the Bayport Marina.

The boat took on water and was partially submerged, the sheriff's office said.

A 35-year-old woman, who has been identified as Kristin Erickson of Minneapolis, made it to shore and wasn't hurt, but the day of the accident officials couldn't find Elgersma, so they conducted a search of the water and land.

The sheriff's office did not say where Elgersma was found nor did they give any information about his condition.

The cause of the incident is under investigation, and the sheriff's office has marked the boat as a safety hazard, noting it "is to be removed by the owner in a timely manner."

According to the Minnesota DNR, there were 71 non-fatal boating accidents and 18 boating deaths in 2015 (the most recent year of data available).
