Man shot by police at Woodbury motel was unarmed hostage

A 19-year-old man police shot and killed in a standoff at a Woodbury motel early Friday was one of the hostages who escaped from the alleged gunman at the motel, the Star Tribune reports. According to police, Mark Eric Henderson was shot by officers as he emerged from the motel room, walked toward them and did not comply with their commands. Officers reportedly believed that Henderson was armed -- but he was not -- and now the victim's family wants answers.

More details came to light Saturday in the shooting death of a man at a Woodbury motel early Friday.

The Star Tribune reports that the 19-year-old man shot by Woodbury police was one of the eight hostages allegedly held by Demetrius S. Ballinger, the man accused of several offenses at the Red Roof Inn during a four-hour standoff with police.

According to police, Mark Eric Henderson of St. Paul was shot by officers as he emerged from the motel room, walked toward them and did not comply with their commands. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension confirmed that Henderson was not armed.

According to the Pioneer Press, witnesses told Henderson's mother that her son was attempting to escape from the room and Ballinger fired at his back.

The Oakdale Patch reported Henderson died of multiple gunshot wounds at Regions Hospital.

Police said Ballinger, 25, of Maplewood, is expected to be charged Tuesday with aggravated robbery, first-degree criminal sexual conduct and kidnapping.

1 dead after Woodbury standoff, hostage situation

Police say a man died in an early-morning shooting and hostage situation Friday in Woodbury, KARE 11 reports. Police were called to the Red Roof Inn off Valley Creek Road and Interstate 494 at about 1:30 a.m. Friday on a report of multiple shots fired. Officers scramabled to evacuate the hotel, then negotiated with the alleged gunman, who was holding as many as nine hostages, according to initial reports. After about four hours, he was taken into custody.
