A man is in a critical condition in a hospital after he was shot trying to break up a robbery attempt in St. Paul Wednesday night.

The Star Tribune reports the 30-year-old from St. Paul was shot around 10 p.m. near the intersection of University and Western avenues.

Police told the newspaper the man was in a car driven by his girlfriend on University Avenue when they saw a man being robbed by four teenage boys.

When the man and his friend, who was also in the car, got out and approached the group, one of the teens pulled a gun and shot the 30-year-old "at least once in the upper body," the Pioneer Press reports.

After the shooting, the victim's girlfriend drove him to Regions Hospital for treatment. The victim's daughter was also in the back seat of the car at the time.

The four suspects and the robbery victim were gone by the time police arrived, the newspaper notes.

Growing trend of robberies

Police spokesperson Steve Linders told BringMeTheNews at this time, there is no link between this incident and a growing number of robberies committed by young people in the western part of St. Paul.

The Western District of St. Paul Police Department wrote on Facebook last week that there have been incidents in recent weeks of 4-10 young people on foot or on bicycles who have been approaching people and attacking them for "no obvious reason."

They have been demanding money, phones and any other valuables, and have been focusing on the areas around Snelling and Thomas avenues.

Police have also said there is no link between these "gangs" and another attempted robbery incident in St. Paul last month, in which a 16-year-old was fatally shot by one of the people he was trying to rob near Summit Avenue.
